Committee on Transport and Communications Networks to meet to discuss Aviation

13 DFómh 2020, 22:00

The Committee on Transport and Communications Networks will meet tomorrow, Wednesday, at 11.30am in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House to examine matters related to the Aviation sector.

Among the key priorities for the committee is scrutiny of Ireland’s connectivity, and with that in mind the following witnesses are due before the committee during a two-hour meeting, the second discussion about this topic in a week.

  • Dr. Chris Horn, former Chairman of the Aviation Task Force.
  • Mr. Pat Dawson, CEO of the Irish Travel Agents Association.
  • Mr. Paul Hackett, Board Member, Irish Travel Agents Association.

In June the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport announced the formation of a Taskforce for Aviation Recovery, requesting it set out recommendations for consideration by Ministers and Government on what needs to be done to assist the Irish aviation sector to recover from the COVID-19 crisis.

The aviation sector supports upwards of 140,000 jobs in the Irish economy, almost 40,000 of which are direct employment by the sector. Ireland also controls over 60% of the entire global leasing market for aircraft, and has a significant international position in maintenance, repair and overhaul.

The ITAA is a representative association for travel agents which represents approximately 100 member companies covering 140 branches in different towns and cities throughout the Republic of Ireland.

Tomorrow’s meeting in Committee Room 4 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.
