Joint Committee on Climate Action to continue Pre-Legislative Scrutiny of the Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Bill 2020

The meeting at 1.30pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House will hear from three international experts on climate action legislation:

• Maria-Krystyna Duval, Head of Climate, Client Earth and a former Government Advisor on New Zealand’s Zero Carbon Act;
• Jonathan Church, Climate Accountability Lawyer, Client Earth;
• Dr Thomas L Muinzer FRSA, Senior Lecturer in Energy Transition Law at the University of Aberdeen’s School of Law.

The Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Bill 2020 proposes that Ireland moves to a climate neutral economy and net zero emissions by 2050.

Committee Chairman Deputy Brian Leddin said: “The Committee has a busy schedule this week with three meetings on the Pre-Legislative Scrutiny of this important legislation. In this first engagement, we look forward to hearing from these international experts on their experience of climate action laws and governance in other countries.”

The Joint Committee on Climate Action has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
