17 Samh 2020, 10:12

The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will resume its discussion on the Conference on the Future of Europe at a meeting in Leinster House tomorrow, Wednesday, 18 November at 9am.

The meeting of TDs and Senators, chaired by Joe McHugh TD, will meet in Committee Room 3.

Director of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies and Director of the Global Governance Programme, European University Institute, Florence, Professor Bridget Laffan; Lecturer in European and public law at University College Cork, Dr Stephen Coutts and Chief Executive and spokesperson of European Movement Ireland (EMI), Noelle O’Connell will join the Committee remotely for the discussion.

Speaking before the meeting, Committee Chairman Deputy Joe McHugh said: “The Committee explored this topic for the first-time last week. The Committee welcomes this engagement with Professor Laffan, Dr Coutts and Noelle O’Connell to get their expert views and opinions on questions around the Conference on the Future of Europe.

“Among the wide-ranging issues the Committee Members want to explore are the scopefor National Parliaments to take part in the event’s steering committee, the priority issues for citizens for discussion, and the best ways to engage the broadest range of citizens and stakeholders in the Conference.

“Following our discussions last week, there is an consensus emerging that new ways of communicating through online platforms will ensure a potentially wider engagement on what a new Europe will look like.”

The Conference on the Future of Europe has been proposed as a two-year, open forum for citizens to share their views with the EU Institutions on the EU’s future priorities and democratic processes, with no pre-determined outcome.
