Seanad observes one minute’s silence for 14 people killed on afternoon of Bloody Sunday 1920

18 Samh 2020, 13:16

During the Order of Business in Seanad Éireann today, the House observed a minute’s silence in commemoration of the 14 people who were killed on the afternoon of Bloody Sunday, 21 November 1920, by the combined forces of the RIC, Auxiliaries, British Army Forces and Black ’n Tans.

The Cathaoirleach read the names of the 14 people into the record of the House.

Speaking today, the Cathaoirleach Senator Mark Daly said: “Many people died on both sides during the War of Independence in Ireland. Today is about commemorating the 14 people who were killed on the afternoon of Sunday 21 November 1920. On that day, 100 years ago men, women and children went to a sporting event and never returned home to their families. It is fitting and appropriate that today Seanad Éireann remembered their lives lost and the loss to their families. It is also appropriate that today we acknowledge the sensitive and caring work carried out by the GAA to safeguard and ensure that the final resting place of those who died in Croke Park on that day is respected.”
