Joint Committee on Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht to discuss impact of Covid-19 on Dancing Sector and Arts Council

24 Samh 2020, 12:59

The Joint Committee on Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht will discuss the impact of Covid-19 on the Irish Dancing Sector, as well as the challenges facing the Arts Council, when it meets tomorrow, Wednesday, 25 November.

The meeting at 2.00pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House will initially hear from representatives of An Coimisiún Le Rincí Gaelacha and Comhdháil na Múinteoirí le Rincí Gaelacha on the impact of Covid-19 on dancing instructors and practitioners.

This will be followed by an engagement with representatives of the Arts Council on the challenges it faces arising from the impact of Covid-19.

Committee Chair Deputy Niamh Smyth said: “Like so many activities, Irish dance and the arts sector in general have been thrown into chaos by the impact of Covid-19 and the challenges posed by the restrictions put in place to protect public health.

“The pandemic has impacted hugely on jobs and livelihoods across the arts sector and put at risk the financial viability of many organisations, including dance groups. The Committee looks forward to hearing the views of the representatives of the Irish dancing sector and the Arts Council on these matters.

The Joint Committee on Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
