Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage to discuss Construction Defects this morning in the first of two meetings scheduled for this week.

1 Noll 2020, 09:16

The Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage will meet twice this week, beginning at 11am today when two witnesses will appear to discuss Construction Defects.

The Construction Defects Alliance and Deirdre Ní Fhloinn, BL, are due in Committee Room 2 from 11am, watch live.

The Construction Defects Alliance is an informal alliance of homeowners and Owners’ Management Companies (OMCs) based in developments affected by construction defects who have come together to campaign for the implementation of the redress proposals contained in the December 2017 Joint Committee on Housing, Planning & Local Government Report ‘Safe as Houses?’.

In advance of the meeting, Committee Chair, Steven Matthews, TD, said: “It is clear that many people and families across the country through no fault of their own are paying the price, financially and emotionally, due to the fact that many properties built in Ireland have Construction Defects.”

“Tuesday’s meeting will give the Construction Defects Alliance the opportunity to outline the issues which property owners face, while Deirdre Ní Fhloinn, BL, will summarise the challenges and opportunities which exist for those impacted by this reality.”

The committee meets again on Thursday from 9am to resume its pre-legislative scrutiny of the General Scheme of the MPDM Bill.

Professor Tasman Crowe, UCD School of Biology and Environmental Science, as well as the Irish Wildlife Trust (IWT) and Coastwatch are scheduled to appear as the Bill comes before the committee for the third time in two weeks.
