Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment to begin Pre-Legislative Scrutiny on the Sale of Tickets (Cultural, Entertainment, Recreational and Sporting Events) Bill 2020

8 Noll 2020, 16:34

The Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment will meet tomorrow, Wednesday, 9 December, to begin Pre-Legislative Scrutiny of the general scheme of the Sale of Tickets (Cultural, Entertainment, Recreational and Sporting Events) Bill 2020.

The meeting at 9am in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House will be briefed by officials from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment on the background to the legislation and its main provisions.

Committee Chairman Deputy Maurice Quinlivan said: “This Bill introduced by the Government follows on from a number of Private Members’ Bills in the last Dáil aimed at dealing with the problem of so-called ticket-touting for major events such as sports matches and concerts.

“The Bill proposes to ban the resale of tickets for live events in designated venues and proposes penalties of a fine of up to €100,000 or up to two years imprisonment, or both, for a person found guilty of an offence under the legislation.

“The Bill also contains a specific provision for the Euro 2020 finals next year, banning the unauthorised sale of tickets for matches. The Committee looks forward to discussing the provisions of the Bill with the Department officials as part of its Pre-Legislative Scrutiny.”

The Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 2 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
