The Joint Committee on Transport and Communications Networks will meet tomorrow when it hears from key stakeholders regarding Customs Checks, Post Brexit.
The meeting at 1pm in Committee Room 4 will hear from the following organisations, The Revenue Commissioners, Irish Road Haulage Association and Shannon Chamber. The Department of the Agriculture have also been invited to attend.
Speaking in advance of the meeting, Committee Chair Kieran O’Donnell, TD, said: “With the first three weeks of cross-channel travel behind us since the UK left the European Union, we look forward to engaging with key organisations regarding the reality on the ground, the challenges and any opportunities which exist for improvements.
“Retailers, suppliers, freight firms and others involved in supply chains between Ireland and Britain have faced challenges since January 1, and Friday’s meeting affords us the opportunity to analyse the procedures which exist at present, as the committee shares the concerns of industry around the flow of goods across the Irish Sea, and to continental Europe. It is vital for businesses and consumers that we have certainty so that goods can travel in all directions.
Chair O’Donnell added: “In particular, we will discuss the systems put in place by the Revenue Commissioners for customs procedures with the UK. Connectivity with the UK and the continent is central to the success of our businesses, and many of the concerns about trade, and supply chains, and the risks and disruption associated with Brexit, remain.”
