The Joint Committee on Health will hear emerging evidence on Vitamin D and its potential to reduce the severity of Covid-19 infection at a meeting in Leinster House tomorrow at 10am.
Professor Rose Anne Kenny and Professor James Bernard Walsh, School of Medicine, Trinity College Dublin and Mercer's Institute for Successful Ageing (MISA), St. James's Hospital; Professor John Faul, Asthma Research Centre, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown; Dr. Martin Healy, Biochemistry Department, St. James's Hospital and Covit-D Consortium and Dr. Daniel McCartney, Director of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, TU Dublin will appear before the Committee.
The Committee of TDs and Senators will discuss the vitamin with the health experts who are members of the Covit-D Consortium.
Speaking before the meeting Committee Chairman Seán Crowe TD said: “The ongoing pandemic has resulted in more than 4,000 deaths across the State and illness and long-term complications for thousands more.
“The Covit-D Consortium believes vitamin D can help in the prevention and treatment of the Covid-19. We welcome this engagement to hear the emerging evidence on the benefits of Vitamin D and to hear the Consortium’s views and recommendations on vitamin D policies and public health guidelines.
All of the witnesses and the Members of the Committee are appearing remotely from their offices by Teams video link. The Chair of the Committee, Seán Crowe TD, will be present in Committee Room 2, LH2000
