Joint Committee on Climate Action to discuss reducing Ireland’s Carbon Emissions by 51 per cent by 2030

The meeting at 1pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House will hear from:

• Tadhg O'Mahony – Independent Consultant in Sustainability Transformations;
• Niall Cussen – Planning Regulator; and
• Andrew Murphy – Transport and Environment.

Committee Chair Deputy Brian Leddin said: “The Climate Action and Low-Carbon Development (Amendment) Bill 2020 proposes to commit Ireland to becoming a zero emissions economy and society by 2050. In our pre-legislative report on the General Scheme of the Bill which we published in December 2020, the Committee recommended that a target of 51 per cent reduction by 2030 over 2018 levels be set in the legislation.

“We have now agreed to undertake a sector-by-sector analysis to investigate how this reduction can be achieved and to commence this analysis with the Transport Sector, which accounts for 20 per cent of Ireland’s total emissions. Members look forward to engaging with Mr O’Mahony, Mr Cussen and Mr Murphy and hearing about the challenges facing the state and the policies that the Committee should be advocating in order for that target to be achieved.”
