Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach to meet with Ulster Bank to discuss its withdrawal from the market

22 Feabh 2021, 09:53

The Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach will meet tomorrow to discuss the withdrawal of Ulster Bank DAC’s operations in Ireland.

Tuesday’s meeting at  4pm in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House can be viewed on Oireachtas TV, and will hear from representatives from Ulster Bank and the Irish Financial Services Union (FSU).

In advance of the meeting, Chairperson of the Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach, John McGuinness, TD, said: “Since November when the Joint Committee was made aware of concerns about the strategic review being undertaken, through representations from the Irish Financial Services Union (FSU), we had sought a meeting with Ulster Bank and NatWest.

“We wished to discuss the lack of engagement with staff and the union about the nature of the review and the possibility that the withdrawal of Ulster Bank from the market was being considered, however Ulster Bank and NatWest had declined all invitations to meet with the Committee, citing commercial sensitivities.

“Following on from Friday’s announcement we have many topics of concern which we wish to discuss tomorrow, they include the nature of job losses, timelines, tracker mortgages and the impact on customers, including businesses, across the country.”
