Joint Committee on Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht to discuss issues facing women in sport and 20/20 Campaign

26 Aib 2021, 13:30

The Joint Committee on Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 27 April, to discuss issues facing women in sport and the progress being made following the 20x20 Campaign.

The meeting at 6.30pm in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House will hear from representatives of:

  • The Camogie Association;
  • The Federation of Irish Sport;
  • The Gaelic Players Association (GPA/ WGPA); and
  • The Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA).

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Niamh Smyth said: “The 20×20 Campaign between October 2018 and October 2020 aimed to create a cultural shift in Ireland so that girls and women in sport are seen as strong, valuable and worth celebrating, and was backed by more than 600 clubs across 45 sports.

“Over that time the campaign saw both an increase in participation in sports and attendance at events, while media coverage of women sports increased significantly. Women’s GAA, rugby and soccer matches are now covered live on television, on radio programmes and in the sports pages of newspapers.

“However, despite this welcome progress, many issues remain for girls and women playing sports in Ireland, in terms of participation, funding, and the impact of Covid-19. The Committee looks forward to discussing these and other matters relating to women in sport with our stakeholders.”

The Joint Committee on Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 4 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
