The Joint Committee on Transport and Communications Networks will meet tomorrow when the challenges facing the Aviation Sector will be discussed.
The witnesses will be; Prof Mark Ferguson, Chief scientific advisor to the Government and Chair of the Covid-19 rapid testing group, and Travel Agents.
Professor Mark Ferguson who is Director General of Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) will appear for the first session from 12.30pm in Committee Room 2, watch live to discuss the recommendations in the Report of the Covid-19 rapid testing group, which he chaired, published in April.
This will be followed by the Irish Travel Agents Association who will appear from 1.30pm to discuss the challenges facing the sector.
Speaking in advance of the meeting, Committee Chair, Kieran O’Donnell TD said: “Wednesday’s meeting will be a timely opportunity to follow up on a body of work which our committee has been engaged with throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Before Christmas as green shoots emerged in terms of a vaccine and recognising the unprecedented challenges facing the aviation industry, the Committee prioritised Aviation in its work.
“One of the key recommendations in our aviation report was to explore the use of rapid antigen testing in Air Travel. We will be discussing this measure further with Professor Ferguson when he appears before us.”
Chair concluded: “The Aviation and Tourism industry must be at the fore as the country re-opens, the impact on Travel Agents and the Aviation Sector has been stark as evidenced by the closure of Joe Walsh Tours last week.”
