Joint Committee on Public Petitions to meet with Ombudsman for Children to discuss ‘Safety and Welfare of Children in Direct Provision’ report

21 Meith 2021, 16:35

The Joint Committee on Public Petitions will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 22 June, with the Ombudsman for Children to discuss his report ‘Safety and Welfare of Children in Direct Provision’ and related matters.

The meeting at 12.30pm will be broadcast from Committee Room 4 of Leinster House and will hear from Niall Muldoon, Ombudsman for Children, and Nuala Ward, Director of Investigations, Ombudsman for Children’s Office.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Martin Browne said: “The Ombudsman for Children’s report on the safety and welfare of children in direct provision has raised troubling issues. These include the findings that Direct Provision accommodation to families seeking international protection does not have the best interests of children, or the protection and promotion of the human rights of child refugees at its core and that the current inspection regime does not take into account the supports needed to meet children’s physical, mental, spiritual, moral and social development. The Committee looks forward to discussing the report, his findings and recommendations, and related matters with Dr Muldoon.”

The Joint Committee on Public Petitions is a standing Committee of the Houses of the Oireachtas and has 11 Members, seven from the Dáil and four from the Seanad.

The meeting in the Committee Room 4 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
