Joint Committee on Transport and Communications to discuss to access to internet in rural and regional locations

6 Iúil 2021, 17:10

The Joint Committee on Transport and Communications will meet tomorrow, Wednesday, 7 July, to discuss access to the internet, particularly in relation to rural and regional locations and satellite internet access.

The meeting at 12.30pm in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House will hear from:

·       Representatives from Novatel Communications;

·       Representatives from Poynting; and

·       Representatives from the National Space Centre.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Kieran O’Donnell said: “Internet access is critical for us all, for work, education, shopping and entertainment, and indeed as has been shown during the pandemic, for remote working and keeping in touch with our family and friends. Many areas, including rural and isolated locations, still have poor or no internet access and the Committee would like to hear the options available for people in those areas, including access via satellite. We look forward to discussing these options and related matters with these stakeholders.”

The Joint Committee on Transport and Communications has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 2 can be viewed live on Oireachtas.ie.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
