Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann welcomes Belarussian Opposition Leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya to Leinster House

Senator Daly took the opportunity to present to Ms Tsikhanouskaya a copy of the motion on Belarus passed in the Seanad this morning.

The Cathaoirleach said: “On behalf of the Houses of the Oireachtas I am delighted to have this opportunity today to welcome Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya to Leinster House and to discuss current events in Belarus with her.

“Democratic legitimacy is the cornerstone on which all elected leaders stand. I condemn all antidemocratic actions and I reject show trials against opponents and legitimate protestors.

“I support any efforts to strengthen democracy and hold free, fair and independent elections.”
