Sub-Committee on Mental Health to meet representatives from the HSE and Mental Health Reform

30 Samh 2021, 09:59

The Sub-Committee on mental health will resume its pre-legislative scrutiny of the General Scheme of the Mental Health Bill at a meeting in Leinster House, today, Tuesday November 30th.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 1 at 11am.

Representatives the Health Service Executive (HSE) and Mental Health Reform will appear before the Sub-Committee.

The purpose of the Bill is to amend the Mental Health Act 2001 to give effect to the recommendations of an Expert Group Review on mental health legislation.

Leas-Cathaoirleach of the Sub-Committee Deputy Mark Ward said:

“The reform of the Mental Health Act 2001 is a key step in the transition towards person centred, recovery-focused services and provides an opportunity for Ireland to be world leaders in the delivery of mental health legislation that adequately protects people’s human rights.”

“The HSE has partnered with Mental Health Reform to hold a consultation process with mental health service users, family members, carers and supporters on their views on the draft Heads of Bill for the new Mental Health Act. 135 people registered for their consultation process which shows the level of interest in mental health reform."

“Reform of the Bill is set to be more person centred and will include more recovery focussed language. The Committee looks forward to discussing this and related matters with the HSE and Mental Health Reform.”

The members of the Sub-Committee are: Cathaoirleach Senator Frances Black, Neasa Hourigan, Gino Kenny, John Lahart, Mark Ward and Senators Aisling Dolan, Martin Conway and Annie Hoey.
