Education Committee to resume scrutiny of the general scheme of the Education (Admissions to School) Bill 2020.

The Joint Committee on Education, Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science will meet tomorrow, Tuesday February 8th to resume its detailed scrutiny of the general scheme of the Education (Admissions to School) Bill 2020.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 2 between 11am to 2pm.

The Bill seeks to amend a provision in the Education (Admissions to School) Bill, 2021, introduced by the previous Government,  whereby 25% of school places are reserved for children and grandchildren of past pupils. Representatives from the following organisations are due to attend the meeting: 


• Dr Niall Muldoon, Ombudsman for Children

Representative from the National Parents Council (Primary) (NPCP)

Representative from National Parents Council (Post-Primary) (NPCPP)

Representative from Barnardos

Dr. David Doyle, Associate Professor of Law, Maynooth University

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Paul Kehoe said: “Last week the Committee met with School Management Bodies regarding the scrutiny of the Education (Admissions to School) Bill 2020.” 


“We welcome the opportunity to hear from relevant organisations and an academic this week who have on the ground knowledge and experience of the impact of this provision whereby up to 25% of school places can be reserved for children and grandchildren of past pupils. The Committee is keen to ascertain how this provision impacts on cohorts of students who do not fit into this criteria."
