Joint Committee on European Union Affairs to meet for engagement with Ambassadors for Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, Poland and Romania

The Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will meet tomorrow, Tuesday March 15th for engagement with the Ambassadors to Ireland for Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, Poland and Romania.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House between 12-3pm and will be split into three sessions.

• 12:00-13:00 - Engagement on Ukraine's Application for Membership of the European Union and other immediate challenges with Ambassador of Ukraine to Ireland Larysa Gerasko. 


• 13:00-14:00 – Engagement on Georgia and Moldova’s application for membership of the European Union and other immediate challenges with Ambassador of Georgia to Ireland, George Zurabashvili and Ambassador of Moldova to Ireland Larisa Miculet.

• 14:00-15:00 - Engagement with the Polish and Romanian Ambassadors on the European Union's Response to the Humanitarian Crisis Following Russia's Invasion of Ukraine with Ambassador of Poland to Ireland Anna Sochańska and Ambassador of Romania to Ireland Laurenţiu-Mihai Ştefan.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Joe McHugh said: “Our Committee looks forward to tomorrow’s engagement with the Ambassadors to discuss a range of issues that have arisen following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine from membership of the European Union to Ireland and the EU’s response to the humanitarian crisis.”

“We also look forward to hearing from the Ambassadors to Ireland from Poland, Georgia, Moldova and Romania.”“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has created the biggest humanitarian crisis since World War Two resulting in the EU pledging €500 million to help refugees fleeing Ukraine. The escalating conflict will see millions of Ukrainians displaced in the coming months and seeking refuge in Ireland and throughout the EU.” 

“We welcome the opportunity to discuss these and other related matters with representatives tomorrow.”
