Speaking ahead of the meeting Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Michael Moynihan said: “We look forward to resuming our discussion regarding Article 11 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which obligates State parties to ensure the protection and safety of persons with disabilities in situations of risk, including situations of armed conflict, humanitarian emergencies and the occurrence of natural disasters.”

“Last week we heard from stakeholders working nationally and at EU level on the application of Article 11 of the UNCRPD across the cross-cutting policy areas of climate change, Covid-19 Response and the Ukrainian War.”

“In situations of risk, including situations of armed conflict, humanitarian emergencies and the occurrence of natural disasters, people with disabilities are significantly disadvantaged and must be placed at the centre of emergency and disaster risk reduction planning.”

”In resuming this topic, we will discuss how representatives are collaborating with their colleagues across the EU to support the thousands of people with disabilities who are trapped or unable to flee the conflict in Ukraine.”

“Ireland will welcome thousands of refugees in the coming months; it is crucial that provisions are made for refugees with disabilities while they stay in Ireland.”

“We look forward to discussing these and other related matters with representatives.”
