Social Protection Committee to discuss the Rural Social Scheme and the Tús Initiative with representatives

10 Beal 2022, 15:54

The Joint Committee on Social Protection, Community and Rural Development and the Islands will meet tomorrow Wednesday May 11th to discuss the State Tús Initiative and the Rural Social Scheme.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House between 09:30-12:30.
Representatives from Services Industrial Professional and Technical Union (SIPTU), Galway Rural Development and Mayo North East Leader Programme will address the meeting.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Denis Naughten TD said: “The Tús initiative is a community work placement scheme providing short-term working opportunities for unemployed people and the Rural Social Scheme (RSS) is aimed at low-income farmers and fishermen/women.

“The benefits of both schemes for participants include a stable income, better mental health and wellbeing and the promotion of safer working practices while also providing multiple benefits to their local communities by supporting voluntary, sporting and community organisations to improve amenities and vital deliver services.”

“Last year, the Government published ‘Our Rural Future: Government’s blueprint to transform rural Ireland which recognises the centrality of the people who live in rural Ireland and the importance of developing and maintaining vibrant and lived-in rural places.”

“We welcome the opportunity to discuss the challenges facing the Rural Social Scheme and Tús with representatives and with a view to charting the path ahead.”
