Committee to discuss the recommendations of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality regarding Gender Equality Principle in Law and Policy

29 Meith 2022, 19:05

The Joint Committee on Gender Equality will meet on Thursday, June 30th to discuss the recommendations of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality regarding Gender Equality Principle in Law and Policy.

The Committee will discuss recommendations 42-45 of the report which can be read in full here.

The meeting will take place in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House between 09:00-12:00.

Officials from the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform and representatives from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) will address the meeting.

The Citizens’ Assembly recommendations include data gathering on key gender equality issue and legislating for equality budgeting across all Government bodies including local authorities. Equality Budgeting involves providing greater information on the likely impact of budgetary measures across a range of areas such as income, health and education, and how outcomes differ across gender, age, ethnicity and so on.

Equality budgeting has been gradually introduced in Ireland since 2018 but it is not currently required by legislation, nor does it apply to all government bodies or local authorities.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Ivana Bacik said: “We look forward to discussing recommendations in the report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality that seek to embed, advance and implement gender equality in law and policy.”

“While there is some collection and publication of gender equality data in Ireland, including by the Central Statistics Office, in some cases there is limited or deficient data on domestic, sexual and gender-based violence, care, gender pay gap measurement. It is important that data collection on gender issues should be expanded in order to inform policy needed to advance gender equality.”
