Joint Committee on Public Petitions and the Ombudsmen to consider petition regarding ‘Flawed Legislation relating to Pensions and Social Security’

2 DFómh 2024, 15:00

The Joint Committee on Public Petitions and the Ombudsmen will meet tomorrow, Thursday, 3 October, at 1.30pm in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House to consider a petition regarding ‘Flawed Legislation relating to Pensions and Social Security’.

The meeting will hear from the petitioner, Mr Frank Moran, and Ms Lucy O’Donohue.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Martin Browne said: “This petition relates to changes made to the Pensions Act 1990 through the Social Welfare, Pensions and Civil Registrations Act 2018, to ensure the entitlement of the same sex couples to benefit from an occupational pension scheme. The petitioner, Mr Frank Moran, argues that the relevant section is ‘fatefully flawed, discriminatory, unreasonable, unconstitutional and is offensive to its original equality intent’. The Committee looks forward to discussing this petition with Mr Moran and Mr O’Donohue.”

The Committee will also consider the following petitions:

·       Public Petition Number P00041/24 ‘Travel grievance for short stay and tourism purpose within CTA for residents’ (resumed);

·       Public Petition Number P00051/24 ‘Oppose the May 2024 Pandemic Agreement Between Ireland and WHO’;

·       Public Petition Number P00052/24 ‘Social Welfare Entitlements for Clergy’.

The
Joint Committee on Public Petitions and the Ombudsmen is a standing Committee of the Houses of the Oireachtas and has 11 Members, seven from the Dáil and four from the Seanad.

The meeting in the Committee Room 4 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.
