Lighting of Christmas tree begins festive season at Leinster House

The Ceann Comhairle, Deputy Seán Ó Fearghaíl, and Cathaoirleach, Senator Jerry Buttimer, have led the ceremony of lighting the Christmas tree on Leinster Lawn, an event that has become the traditional start of the festive season in the Houses of the Oireachtas.

Gathering in the Seanad Chamber where Yeats contributed to parliamentary debates, artists, public figures and relatives of the great poet and dramatist took part in an event marking the centenary of the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature to Yeats in 1923 and his contribution to the public and political life of the new Irish State.

National Bravery Awards 2023

At the annual event in Farmleigh House, six bronze medals and 13 silver medals were awarded, along with 26 certificates, to recognise acts of bravery. A posthumous gold medal was awarded to James Nicholl, who selflessly tried to save a man drowning in the Liffey in April.

Number of parliamentary questions published during 33rd Dáil reaches unprecedented milestone

For the first time, the number of parliamentary questions (PQs) asked, replied to and published during a Dáil has exceeded 200,000. During this week, the number passed the previous record, from the 31st Dáil, of just over 198,000 questions and replies published to the site and it now stands at 200,228. Remarkably, this new record was set in 169 fewer sitting days than that accumulated in the 31st Dáil.
