Joint Committee on Transport and Communications to meet with An Garda Síochána for engagement on road safety

15 May 2024, 11:06

The Joint Committee on Transport and Communications will meet today, Wednesday, 15th May 2024 with the Garda Commissioner and other representatives from An Garda Síochána for engagement on road safety at 12pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Leas-Chathaoirleach Senator Gerry Horkan said: “Our Committee looks forward to engaging with An Garda Síochána this afternoon on their current road safety operations. We will take this opportunity to discuss the Garda Commissioner’s plans in-depth and we will welcome his perspectives on the challenges the organisation faces as it endeavours to keep road users safe in Ireland.

“We will continue to use this engagement to concentrate on the on-going national issues impacting our road users. We recently welcomed the Road Safety Authority to our Committee meeting where we sought as much detail as possible on why road accidents are continuing to occur at such increased frequency.

“As we did in that meeting, we will look to An Garda Síochána to outline where progress can be made in addressing these accidents and the unfortunate fatalities that persist on our roads.

“Our Committee’s message continues to be that enforcement is a key area that needs to be enhanced, along with driver education and the use of technology to reduce road deaths and injuries.”

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

The Joint Committee on Transport and Communications has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
