The Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 14 June to discuss Biodiversity with officials from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
Speaking ahead of the meeting at 11am in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Brian Leddin said: “Biodiversity covers the variety of life on earth and feeds into may important ecosystems that are critical to everyday life, including food, pollination, soil fertility, water and climate regulation. Protection of biodiversity is also a critical consideration with regard to climate action. Both the biodiversity crisis and the climate crisis are inextricably interwoven.
“Multiple assessments have all demonstrated on-going declines in biodiversity at national, regional and local levels. How we reverse these declines and protect biodiversity and our ecosystems is a critical part of our response to climate change and developing a more sustainable future. The Committee looks forward to a wide-ranging and detailed discussion with the Department officials.”
The Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.
Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
