asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the aggregate total amount of the funds in court classified as dormant balances as at the date of the last accounting period in each of the years 1930 to 1935 inclusive; and if he will state the several purposes for which any part of these dormant balances have been utilised and the amount so utilised in each case.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dormant Balances.
As the answer to this question contains a number of tabular statements I propose, with the Deputy's permission, to have it circulated in the Official Report.
Subjoined are statements showing the funds in the High Court classified as dormant balances for the years 1930 to 1935, and also the amounts of cash and 2½ per cent. Consols appropriated for various purposes under the authority of certain specified Statutes.
It should be understood that there is only one general cash account in the name of the accountant in the Bank of Ireland and that all cash balances both dormant and current are held in this account. According to the books of this office there should have been to credit of this cash account on the 30th September last a total sum of £413,378 17s. 11d., of which the dormant cash balance of £209,109 4s. 5d. forms part. Owing, however, to the various appropriations of cash above referred to and shown in detail on the subjoined statement and a deficiency of £7 3s. 4d. in certain old accounts, the actual cash to credit in the Bank of Ireland was reduced to £88,221 0s. 1d. The securities shown to credit of the dormant accounts are actually held by the accountant.
