Vol. 59 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Bread.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he can state when the proposals for legislation to deal generally with the price of bread will be introduced and if in view of the proposal to adjourn the Dáil for a lengthy period he will indicate what steps he proposes taking pending the enactment of legislation to secure a reduction in the price of bread to the level recommended by the Prices Commission.

The legislation relating to bread prices is in course of preparation and will be introduced as soon as possible. Bread prices are above the level recommended by the commission in only a few districts, but nothing can be done to remedy this until the necessary legislation is passed.

Is the Minister perfectly satisfied that he has no powers under existing legislation to enforce the recommendations of the Prices Commission made in July last?

I am satisfied that legislation is required.

To enforce the recommendations?

To regulate bread prices.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, is it not true that, as the quantity of Irish wheat incorporated in baker's flour is increased under the policy of the Minister for Agriculture, the price of bread will continue to rise, and bread will be selling in this State at a price substantially higher than that which at present obtains?
