Vol. 63 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Erection of Cottages in Clare.

Mr. Hogan

(Clare) asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state how many labourers' cottages have been erected under the Housing Acts within the past four years by the Clare Board of Health in respect of each of the three schemes initiated by the Clare Board of Health and sanctioned by his Department.

The Clare Board of Health has, since 1st April, 1932, erected 126 cottages under the Labourers Acts, of which 24 were erected under their first scheme, 71 under their second scheme, and 31 under their third scheme.

Mr. Hogan

Does the Minister consider that the board is doing all it might do, having regard to the fact that there are 1,000 applications for cottages in that county health area?

I understand that the board of health had considerable difficulty in getting contractors for many of their cottages. There are at present 179 cottages in the course of construction, and I understand that, in order to get over the difficulties about contractors, the board are now preparing a scheme for construction of a number of their cottages by direct labour.

Mr. Hogan

Will it take them 40 years to erect 1,000 houses?

The Deputy is a member of the board and has as much responsibility as any other member. I hope he will Speak to the board as he is speaking here.

Mr. Hogan

I am not a member of the board. Only certain people are allowed on the board.
