asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he has received a memorial from Castletownbere asking for consideration for a proposal to open up by a properly constructed and steamrolled road the scenic and historic centre from Dunboy through Barnes Gap on to Allihies, Reentrisk and Urhan and connecting with the Kenmare Road near Eyeries; and if, seeing that the Cork County Council's surveyors have approved of the work as being one of permanent utility, as well as being a source of valuable employment in a deserving district, he will make a grant from the Road Fund or from the Employment Scheme Vote for the carrying out of the work during the present season.

I received a memorial from the Castletownbere Tourist Development Association in this matter on the 7th instant. I have also received a communication from the Cork County Council enclosing a report from the county surveyor in which it is indicated that the work required would entail an expenditure of £26,000. The county council suggest that the work might be spread over a period of four years. The county council have been requested to furnish further particulars. A sum of £1,900 was provided from the Employment Schemes Vote, 1936-37, for work on portion of this route. The works are in progress.
