Vol. 82 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flour Scarcity.

asked the Minister for Supplies if the warning issued by his Department on 19th April with the statement that there is only enough wheat and flour in the country to carry on for the next few months denotes any worsening of the wheat and flour position since April 4th; if a loaf of wheat and other cereals has been decided upon and is soon to be on sale to the public; and if the procuring of the extra supplies of other cereals so necessitated has been successfully attended to.

There has been no worsening of the wheat and flour position and provided the public co-operate by responding to my appeals for economy in the use of flour and bread, I do not anticipate that, during the present cereal year, it will be necessary to alter the composition of the loaf as at present on sale.

Will the Minister say why, in view of the necessity for economy in the use of bread, he has not made an order prohibiting the sale of bread before it is at least 12 hours baked?

That matter was very fully considered and I am quite satisfied that no economy would result.

Mr. Morrissey

That is not the experience of any other country.

No other country is working on a 95 per cent. extraction.
