Vol. 126 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Partition.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he is aware that the veterans of the Old Republican Army are anxious that he should take a positive step to make the ending of Partition a live issue; and, if so, if he will state the nature of his plans towards that end.

I am aware that the vast majority of the Irish people desire that everything possible should be done to bring Partition to an end in the interests of the people of all classes and creeds in this island and indeed in the best interests of the people of the neighbouring island and of all democratic nations.

The Government will do everything in its power to make this desire of the Irish people effective whilst avoiding those things which, though they might meet with popular approval in the short run, would in the long run prove harmful to the cause of national unity.

Is the Minister aware that the British garrison in this country treat the present Taoiseach as their friend? Will he take steps——

That is an entirely irrelevant question.
