asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will ensure that when the 1938 trade agreement with Britain is due for revision this year the importation of salted, smoked and cured fish will be prohibited except under licence.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Importation of Fish.
Mr. Walsh
The 1938 trade agreement already provides for the regulation, in consultation with the British authorities, of imports of salted, smoked and cured fish from Britain should this become necessary. The trade discussions between Irish and British officials, to which reference has already been made in the Dáil, relate to the annex to the 1948 agreement, which does not deal with fish.
Is it not a fact that smoked, salted and cured fish may be imported ad libwithout a licence?
Under the 1938 agreement?
Yes. Would the Minister not take steps to remedy that?
