Vol. 160 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Loan Expenses.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in relation to the recent 5½ per cent. National Loan the details of the total expenditure incurred in underwriting and advertising, including the cost of circularising and postage at normal business rates.

Accounts in respect of the expenses of the 5½ per cent. National Loan have not been completed but the following is an approximate and provisional estimate:—

£

Underwriting Commission

48,000

Brokerage

26,700

Other expenses, including publicity

12,500

Total

87,200

The cost of issuing the circular letter which was a special feature of the publicity in connection with this Loan is provisionally estimated at £2,500 which includes £1,000 as the net cost of distribution by the Department of Posts and Telegraphs.

For the Deputy's information I may say that the letter was sent to all persons on the addressograph lists of the E.S.B. and in this way a wide public was reached at little cost. The results of the Loan show by comparison with the February issue an increase of about 60 per cent. in the number of subscriptions of £500 and under and an increase in the total of such subscriptions of over £1,000,000.
