Written Answers. - James Connolly Memorial Hospital.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state (a) the maximum number of patients for which bed accommodation is provided at James Connolly Memorial Hospital, Blanchardstown, (b) the average number of beds at present occupied by patients, (c) the average number of males and females accommodated for each year since the opening of the hospital, (d) the total number of such patients certified by the County Dublin Medical Officer and by the Dublin City Officer and (e) the present weekly charge per patient.

(a) The approximate number of beds provided in the James Connolly Memorial Hospital for adult tubercular patients is 426, for child tubercular patients is 36 and for non-tubercular patients is 28; total 490 beds. In addition, there is a 30-bed unit which has not, so far, been brought into use.

(b) The number of beds occupied by patients in the hospital on 31st October, 1958, the latest date for which figures have been supplied to my Department, and the average number (based on the number of beds occupied on the last day of each month) in the year ended on that date were as follows:—

(c) The following table shows the average number of male and female tubercular patients (based on the number of beds occupied on the last day of each month) in the hospital each year since it was opened to patients in July, 1955:—

(d) Average number of male and female tubercular patients, calculated as at (c) above, certified by the Dublin City Medical Officer and Dublin County Medical Officer:—

NOTE.—Figures for non-tubercular patients, similar to (c) and (d) above, are available from 1st April, 1958, only and do not distinguish between male and female patients. As indicated at (b) above, there was an average of 27 such patients in the hospital during the period ended 31st October, 1958.
