Vol. 179 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - University Scholarships.

33.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that the sum awarded in the way of State scholarships to Universities was fixed many years ago and is most inadequate; and, if so, if he will now consider having the amount substantially increased.

The two schemes for the award of University scholarships operated by my Department are (i) the scheme for the award of scholarships to candidates from the Gaeltacht and (ii) the scheme for the award of scholarships to candidates who wish to pursue their University courses through the medium of Irish.

It is true that the value of the individual Scholarships concerned was originally fixed many years ago, but that value has been revised twice, the second time being in respect of the current academic year.
