Vol. 179 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cleggan Harbour (Galway): Lock Gates and Obstructions.

25.

asked the Minister for Finance if a grant has yet been sanctioned for the provision of lock gates and for the clearing of obstructions at Cleggan harbour, Clifden, County Galway; and when the work will be put in hands.

The restoration of the dock gates at Cleggan Harbour would necessitate the provision of a removable barrier or boom to safeguard them against damage from exceptionally heavy seas. These works would give the necessary shelter for safe harbourage during stormy weather but would only afford limited flotation in the dock at all stages of the tide. The order of cost of these works would be upwards of £8,000, and as there appears to be little need for the provision of flotation in the dock at low water periods the cost of the whole proposal is considered to be too dear in relation to its utility.

Adequate shelter can be provided by installation of the barrier or boom on its own. This work including a hand operated crane and the clearance of obstructions, is estimated to cost £2,150, and would appear to be warranted in the local fishery interests. The making of a grant available towards the cost of this smaller work on the usual conditions that the Galway County Council will contribute one quarter of the cost and maintain the work on completion is under consideration and it is hoped that a decision will be reached shortly.
