Vol. 245 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Butter and Cheese Quotas.

25.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will make a statement on the net effect of the new British butter and cheese quotas on Irish dairy exports.

The Irish quota for butter has been increased by 4,000 tons and as prices on the British market are currently more than £200 per ton higher than those obtaining on world markets generally, the increase represents a significant benefit to the country and to the milk producers. In the case of cheese, the quantity to be supplied by Ireland in 1970-71 is the same as the annual rate for the past two years, whereas the quantities to be supplied by the other major suppliers show some reduction, and while some price benefit could result from this it is not likely to be very great.
