Vol. 245 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Membership of EEC.

2.

asked the Taoiseach if he has any observations to make on the statement of M. Rey of EEC on 24th March that Ireland might be admitted to the EEC in early 1973.

I consider that M. Rey's reported expection that Ireland will be a member of the European Economic Community by 1973 is a reasonable one.

Would the Taoiseach tell us why the White Paper on the effects of Ireland's membership of the EEC has not yet been published in view of the fact that he told this House on several occasions that this White Paper would be produced before the 31st March?

That seems to be a different question.

I can answer it anyway, Sir. I did say that I expected the White Paper to be introduced before the end of March. In the meantime came the Easter holidays, but I can assure the Deputy that the White Paper will be published within a couple of weeks.

Surely the Taoiseach knew two months ago when Easter would fall?

I did, of course, but I cannot contemplate all the difficulties —printing and otherwise—that can arise.

Surely the Taoiseach contemplated Easter and the date of it?
