Vol. 262 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prisoners' Rights.

105.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will arrange to have a statement of prisoners' rights publicly displayed in Garda stations and other places of detention; and, if not, why.

As far as the public display of such statements in Garda stations is concerned I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Dáil Question No. 34 of 18th February, 1971.

In the case of prisons and other places of detention for which I have responsibility the rules for the government of prisons, 1947, require to be displayed in each cell an abstract of the rules governing the treatment and conduct of prisoners, including those entitling the prisoner to make requests or complaints to the governor, the visiting committee or the Minister for Justice.
