Vol. 263 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - House Prices.

103.

asked the Minister for Local Government by what percentage the cost of an average house is estimated to have risen since June, 1970.

Figures contained in the quarterly bulletin of housing statistics published by my Department indicate that the average gross price of a new private house for which a loan was approved by one of the three main lending agencies rose in all areas by 25 per cent in the period June, 1970, to June, 1972. On the basis of tenders approved by my Department, the increase in the average building cost of a five-roomed local authority house between June, 1970, and September, 1972, was of the same order.

(Cavan): In view of that, can the Minister not see the urgency for increasing the subsidy which he admits has not been increased since 1970?

It is being kept under review. Of course, these factors would influence my decision.
