Vol. 265 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Poached Venison.

33.

asked the Minister for Lands the steps it is proposed to take to prevent hotels from serving poached venison.

(Cavan): Under existing law deer are not classified as game. This will be remedied under proposed legislation which also envisages a number of measures for the regulation of dealings in wildlife, including game species. In the meantime, if the Deputy has information of any instance where a hotel is serving stolen venison he might perhaps be good enough to pass the information to me.

Can the Minister tell us when he proposes to introduce legislation in this regard?

(Cavan): A Bill has already been drafted and passed to other Departments for their observations. Their observations have been received and it is now ready for submission to the Government for formal approval.

Was this Bill drafted by the previous Minister?

(Cavan): I do not know who drafted it, but that is the position now.
