Vol. 300 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Car Prices.

5.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy if he is aware of the serious discrepancy between Britain and Ireland in the retail prices of motor cars; if he is satisfied that these price variations are accounted for solely by VAT differences and extra freight charges; and if he will institute an inquiry into the matter.

I am aware that the retail prices of motor cars are higher here than in Britain. Apart from differences in the rate of VAT and in freight charges, other factors relevant to any comparison of car prices in the two countries are excise duties and the diseconomies of scale associated with the level of motor vehicle assembly undertaken in this country.

As to an inquiry in the matter, a detailed study of the motor vehicle industry is at present being undertaken for the National Prices Commission by consultants. I understand that the National Prices Commission expect to be able to report to me arising from the consultants' report by the end of this year.
