Vol. 305 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cystic Fibrosis.

35.

asked the Minister for Health if he will make moneys available for research into cystic fibrosis.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to reply to Question Nos. 34 and 35 together. Moneys for medical research are allocated by my Department to the Medical Research Council. Determination of the areas to be researched is a matter for the council who are advised by specialist committees. No specific research projects relating to asthma or cystic fibrosis are being supported at present by the council.

However, in addition to research carried out under the control of the Medical Research Council, various conditions such as asthma are investigated as part of the services provided at a number of hospitals. The cost involved in these projects cannot readily be ascertainable.
