The number of apprenticeships offered in any year is governed by the demands of employers and the needs of the economy. Where the numbers of apprenticeships offered by employers falls short of the needs of the economy AnCO sponsors apprentices directly to make up the difference. The following is the position regarding apprenticeships at the Galway training centre:

With regard to the success rate in finding permanent employment approximately 50 per cent of the participants on AnCO community youth training programmes in Galway go into permanent employment on completion of their training. This figure does not include those who subsequently take up apprenticeships with AnCO or pursue regular AnCO training courses.
On a national basis 80 per cent of the participants on the National Manpower Service work experience programmes are successful in securing employment.
Both programmes have been successful on a national basis. AnCO's community youth training programme, which is a training rather than a work experience programme, has enabled AnCO to provide training in areas which may be remote from training centres. From 1979 to date 28 projects have been completed in the Galway training centre catchment area. Placement has been satisfactory considering the remoteness of many of the projects and the fact that many trainees subsequently attend other AnCO courses. The success of the NMS work experience programme is indicated by the high placement rate of participants.
The tables show an increase in the number of young people from the Galway area involved in these programmes.
