Vol. 343 No. 6

Written Answers. - Dublin Medical Card Holder.

753.

asked the Minister for Health the decision he has reached in relation to the appeal by a person (details supplied) in Dublin 3, for the retention of a medical card which he needs as he requires constant medical attention which costs a minimum of £15 per week which he finds hard to afford.

The determination of eligibility to hold a medical card is a matter for the chief executive officer of the health board and decisions are made in accordance with the guidelines set down for determining eligibility with due regard to the applicant's medical expenses.

In this case the applicant was granted a medical card in July 1982 and was notified on 31 January 1983 that a review of his eligibility was to take place. On the basis of the details supplied at that time the person in question was informed on 22 March 1983 that as his income was in excess of the guidelines he was no longer entitled to hold a medical card. The decision was appealed and confirmation of the applicant's income was requested on 18 April 1983. To date this information has not been received by the health board. On receipt of the requested information, I understand from the Eastern Health Board that a final decision will be made in the case.
