Vol. 350 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Wexford School Facilities.

693.

asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the fact that there are over 300 pupils attending a national school (details supplied) in County Wexford and that 9 to 10 per cent of pupils nationally require remedial teaching, she will immediately sanction a remedial teacher for this school; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The applications of schools for remedial posts are examined by my Department and posts are allocated to the schools from the available allocation of teachers in accordance with priority of need Following careful consideration the application of the school in question in County Wexford was not placed sufficiently high in order of priority of need to warrant the allocation of a post in the school year 1983-84. The school's current application will be considered in the circumstances obtaining in relation to the creation of any such posts for the 198485 school year.

694.

asked the Minister for Education if she will immediately approve of the building of an extension accommodating three classrooms to a national school (details supplied) in County Wexford as there is vast over-crowding and a neccessity for a remedial teacher and remedial training facilities, and predictions are, that the population will be stable in the foreseeable future; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

My Department has approved a proposal to provide an extension of one classroom and staff accommodation at the school referred to. It does not have before it formal proposals for an extension comprising. three classrooms. My Department proposes to refer the matter to its local inspector for a survey of enrolment trends and for discussion with the school authorities as to what additional permanent accommodation may be required.
