asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of worker co-operatives registered in 1985.

Limerick East): While there is no legal definition of a workers co-operative and societies seeking registration are not obliged to categorise themselves as such, a check of the rules of the 55 industrial and provident societies registered during 1985 to determine societies in which control is held by the employees would indicate that seven societies registered during that period might be described as workers co-operatives.
