Vol. 365 No. 1

Written Answers. - Foster Care.

159.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware of the unease of some foster parents concerning the present system of filing information on foster parents and children in foster care; if he will undertake to have discussions with the Irish Foster Care Association; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not aware of the particular issue raised by the Deputy. However, if the Deputy would ask the Irish Foster Care Association to make a submission to me I will consider the matter.

160.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware that the Irish Foster Care Association are deeply concerned at the lack of insurance cover in fostering situations thereby rendering foster parents very vulnerable where a foster child causes damage leading to an insurance claim; that in the event of a car accident foster parents are deemed to be 10 per cent negligent which would mean a liability of £10,000 in a damages award for £100,000; that this anomalous position is a serious threat to the willingness of parents to foster children; and the proposals he has to remedy this unsatisfactory position.

I have recently received a submission on this subject and it is currently being examined in my Department in consultation with the health boards. I will reply to the Deputy in due course.
