asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the high unemployment rate in the Westport area and in order to stem the tide of emigration, he will take immediate steps to locate industry there.

Limerick East): The Industrial Development Authority is actively promoting Westport as a location for industrial investment.

Just recently a major expansion of Allergan Pharmaceuticals was announced. This will give rise to 50 additional jobs initially with further opportunity for expansion as the project proceeds.

The IDA has available in Westport a 21,700 sq. ft. advance factory, together with a small industry unit of 3,300 sq. ft. and a 30 acre site. All these facilities will continue to be actively promoted in an effort to attract suitable projects to the town.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the serious loss of income to the small farming communities in the Clew Bay area, because of the closure of the seaweed factory in Newport; and if he will provide assistance to have this factory made operational or explore the possibility of providing a replacement industry.

Limerick East): I am aware of the matter referred to by the Deputy. I understand that the IDA are encouraging negotiations taking place at present with a view to recommencement of operations.
